Russian Tycoon Told to Pay $4.5 Billion in Record Swiss Divorce

May 19 (Bloomberg) -- A Swiss court awarded the ex-wife of Dmitry Rybolovlev more than 4.02 billion Swiss francs ($4.5 billion) in their divorce, or almost half of the AS Monaco Football Club owner’s net worth.

The amount, issued in a May 13 judgment by a Geneva court in favor of Elena Rybolovleva, is believed to be the largest ever in a divorce case in Switzerland, her lawyer said.

“Never has an oligarch judicially had to discharge such a debt to his wife,” Marc Bonnant said in an e-mailed statement.

Rybolovlev, who has a net worth of $10.3 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, made his fortune from the sale of two Russian fertilizer companies, Uralkali OJSC and Silvinit OJSC. He lives in Monaco.

Rybolovlev’s lawyer, Tetiana Bersheda, said in an e-mailed statement, that the ruling isn’t final and should be appealed.

The couple have contested the terms of their divorce since 2008. The ruling, reported earlier today by the Swiss newspaper Le Temps, also granted Rybolovleva full ownership of the couple’s property in the wealthy Geneva enclave of Cologny.
