Addax Starts Producing Clean Fuel and Power in Sierra Leone

Addax Bioenergy SA, a unit of Geneva-based oil and gas company Addax & Oryx Group Ltd., began producing sugarcane bioethanol in Sierra Leone.

The 400 million-euro ($550 million) project in Makeni is made up of a sugarcane plantation, bioethanol refinery and biomass heat and power plant to meet as much as about 20 percent of the country’s electricity needs, Addax said today in an e-mailed statement.

“The project has already brought significant local improvements, including food security through our farmer development program and increased school attendance, health and new-home building thanks to family incomes,” Simon Cleasby, chief executive officer of Addax Bioenergy, said in the statement.
