Google Buys Retail Tech Startup Rangespan for Shopping

Google Inc. is boosting its shopping services with the purchase of Rangespan Ltd., a company founded by former Inc. executives.

Rangespan, which provides tools for managing product listings, will join Google’s Shopping unit and its employees will focus on analytics for retailers, Google said in an e-mailed statement. Terms weren’t disclosed.

“We are very happy to announce that Rangespan is joining Google,” Rangespan said on its website. “We will continue to work on services for shoppers and retailers at Google, and we’re super excited about the opportunities to come.”

Google is working to prevent Amazon and EBay Inc. from grabbing consumer searches for products online with its Shopping service, which lets people quickly find pictures and prices of items online. The Mountain View, California-based company has been adding new features to the offering, including same-day delivery in some cities.

Rangespan said it will wind down its services as part of the move. The company was backed by Octopus Investments. On its website, Octopus said Rangespan was started in 2011 by a team of former Amazon senior executives and engineers.

Rangespan’s co-founders are Matt Henderson and Ryan Regan, according to a cached page of Rangespan’s website from Google. Henderson formerly worked at Amazon as a director of merchant services in the U.K., while Regan was chief financial officer at Ltd. and worked at Amazon for eight years in roles including managing director.
