A case of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 from the Pauillac district of Bordeaux sold for $36,750 to a U.S. trade buyer at a Sotheby’s wine auction Saturday in New York, matching the pre-sale estimate and making it top lot.

Twelve bottles of Chateau Lafleur 2000 Pomerol, a Bordeaux from the right bank of the Dordogne, fetched $24,500 while a case of Chateau Haut Brion 1989 from Pessac-Leognan sold for $22,050, Sotheby’s said in an e-mail. Both lots in the April 26 sale went to U.S. private buyers.

The auction came as the attention of collectors has been focusing on the sales campaign for the 2013 Bordeaux vintage currently under way. Amid merchant pressure for lower prices on new wines, the Liv-ex 50 Index of top Bordeaux wines is heading for its eighth consecutive monthly decline.

“North America reasserted itself in the auction market today,” Duncan Sterling, head of New York wine auctions at Sotheby’s, said in the statement, noting that buyers from the region accounted for 15 out of the top 20 at the sale. He also cited “an emphasis on more mature vintages” among lots achieving high prices.

The sale totaled $1.45 million, according to Sotheby’s. Other leading lots included six bottles of Chateau Petrus 1990, which fetched $20,825, and a six-liter imperial of Lafite 1982, which sold for $18,375.
