Gary DeWaal to Join Katten Muchin as Special Counsel in New York

April 28 (Bloomberg) -- Gary DeWaal, who served as general counsel to futures brokerage Newedge Group SA, is joining Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP as special counsel in the firm’s New York office.

Before founding his own company in 2013, DeWaal ran the legal, compliance, financial crimes prevention and regulatory development departments at Newedge, one of the largest brokers in exchange-traded derivatives. He’d worked at Fimat, a Newedge predecessor, since 1995. Earlier in his career, he was a trial attorney in the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s enforcement division and a stringer for the New York Times, according to a statement from Katten Muchin.

“I have worked and known partners and associates at Katten for many decades and have always had great respect for the firm and the personnel there,” DeWaal said during an interview last week. He’ll concentrate on financial services and issues relating to exchange-traded derivatives for the firm’s clients, he said.

“The insight and wealth of knowledge Gary brings is the result of his immense experience over 30 years in diverse legal roles in-house, in private practice, at the CFTC and also running his own business,” Arthur Hahn, global co-chair of Katten’s financial services practice, said in the statement.

After leaving Newedge, DeWaal founded Gary DeWaal & Associates LLC, a consultancy that advised clients on regulatory issues.
