Neiman Marcus Gets Your Used Castoffs Picked Up From Home

Many Americans who want to get rid of old clothes drive to places like Goodwill stores, dump bursting shopping bags and leave with a blank receipt to claim a tax deduction.

From now on, members of luxury chain Neiman Marcus Group Ltd.’s InCircle loyalty program won’t need to leave the house to donate their used Gucci handbag or Valentino shoes.

In partnership with Fashion Project, an upscale online clothing donation service, Neiman’s members will be able to have those gently used items picked up from their doorstep. Once donations are processed, they get receipts by e-mail declaring the value of the donated items and receive sweeteners: gift cards they can use toward purchases at Neiman Marcus and its Bergdorf Goodman stores.

“Partnering with Fashion Project to offer the White Glove donation service presents our InCircle customers with an unprecedented opportunity to give back,” Maggie Lucas, a director of InCircle, credit and gift card marketing for Neiman Marcus, said in a statement yesterday.

To qualify for a pickup by one of Fashion Project’s White Glove donation stylists, InCircle members must have at least 10 items and be located within a 30-mile radius of a Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman store. For every 10 items donated, InCircle members will earn $100 gift cards, up to a value of $1,000.

Boston-based Fashion Project, founded in 2012, sells the clothes on its website and gives the majority of the proceeds to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Neiman Marcus joins fellow retailer Nordstrom Inc. in offering the service, the difference being that Nordstrom’s customers must mail in their donations, for which they get $40 gift cards for five items.
