Meb Keflezighi won the Boston Marathon with an unofficial time of 2 hours, eight minutes and 36 seconds, the first American male to win the race since 1983. Rita Jeptoo of Kenya won the women’s race in a course-record 2:18:57.

Keflezighi, 38, led for more than half the 26.2 miles and raised his hands in victory before crossing the finish line. He’s the first American male winner since Greg Meyer in 1983, ending a 23-year stretch during which all but one male winner was either from Kenya or Ethiopia.

Keflezighi’s lead of more than 80 seconds shrunk to six seconds in the final two miles. He surged in the final 400 meters and kissed the pavement after winning.
