Sheppard Mullin Gets 10 McKenna Partners: Business of Law

April 8 (Bloomberg) -- Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP hired 10 partners from McKenna, Long & Aldridge LLP’s real estate group and insurance and business trial practice, mostly in San Diego.

Nancy T. Scull and David M. Hymer join the real estate, land use and environmental practice group in San Diego. They had spent their entire careers at McKenna and its predecessor firm, Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps, the firm said in a statement.

Eight additional partners are joining Sheppard Mullin’s insurance and business trial practices: Peter H. Klee, Ronald D. Getchey, Charles A. Danaher, John T. Brooks, Nathan S. Arrington, R. Randal Crispen, Marc J. Feldman and Theona Zhordania. The team works out of the San Diego office, except for Zhordania, who will be in Los Angeles.

“The partners have worked together for most of or their entire careers; they are strong from top to bottom, and they are renowned in their arena,” Guy Halgren, chairman of Sheppard Mullin, said in a statement.

Kirby McInerney Adds New York’s Former Top Whistle-Blower Lawyer

Randall Fox, founding head of the Taxpayer Protection Bureau in New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office, joined Kirby McInerney LLP as a partner.

Fox, who pursued fraud claims on the state’s behalf, including a $400 million whistle-blower claim against Sprint Corp. for taxes the company allegedly failed to pay, joined Kirby McInerney’s New York office, the firm said in a statement yesterday.

Adding Fox is part of an expansion of the firm’s whistle-blower practice. In Schneiderman’s office, Fox concentrated on suits claiming the state was cheated in procurement contracts, grant programs, pension fund investments and unpaid taxes.

Weil Adds Goldman Sachs Executive to London Restructuring Group

Andrew Wilkinson, Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s European co-head of restructuring, is joining Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP’s London office as a partner.

Wilkinson, who spent seven years at Goldman Sachs, established the restructuring team at Clifford Chance LLP before joining Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in 1997, where he was London managing partner and head of European restructuring, the firm said in a statement.

“Andrew’s arrival will enable us to continue to build on the excellent work of Adam Plainer and his team in London,” Mike Francies, Weil Gotshal’s London managing partner, said in a statement. “His skills as both a lawyer and a banker will be instrumental to the further development of our elite restructuring practice.”

A&O, Ropes, Latham Among Law Firms on $23 Billion Vivendi Deal

Allen & Overy LLP advised Vivendi SA, which agreed to sell its French phone unit SFR to Altice SA in a deal valued at more than 17 billion euros ($23 billion).

Ropes & Gray LLP advised long-standing client Altice, in connection with the financing of the deal. Paris law firm Franklin advised on the M&A aspects for Altice.

The A&O Paris team providing mergers-and-acquisitions advice was led by Marcus Billam and included partners Frederic Moreau and Frederic Jungels. Roderic Cork advised on the financing aspects. A&O also provided advice on public law, competition, intellectual property, capital markets, employment, litigation, tax and real estate, the firm said.

London finance partner Mike Kazakevich led the Ropes & Gray team, assisted by finance partner Mike Goetz and tax partner Brenda Coleman.

Wachtell, Latham on Mallinckrodt’s $5.6 Billion Questcor Deal

Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and Arthur Cox advised Mallinckrodt Plc, which agreed to buy Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. for $5.6 billion to add specialty drugs, in the latest industry deal that moves a U.S. company to Ireland for a lower tax rate. Latham & Watkins LLP and Matheson advised Questcor.

Wachtell Lipton’s team is led by Adam O. Emmerich and Benjamin M. Roth and includes partners Eric M. Rosof, restructuring and finance; Jodi J. Schwartz, tax; Jeremy L. Goldstein and Adam J. Shapiro, executive compensation and benefits; and Ilene Knable Gotts, antitrust.

Latham & Watkins’s corporate team consists of partners Cary Hyden, Scott Shean, Paul Tosetti and Michael Treska. Additional partners include Laurence Stein and Nicholas DeNovio, tax; Wesley Holmes, finance; Jim Barrall, benefits and compensation; Peter Wald and Michele Johnson, compliance; Michael Egge, antitrust; and Christopher Norton, environmental.

Shearman & Sterling Advises Sun on $3.2 Billion Ranbaxy Deal

Shearman & Sterling LLP, Crawford Bayley & Co. and S.H. Bathiya & Associates advised Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., India’s largest drugmaker by market value, on its agreement to buy competitor Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. for $3.2 billion from Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co.

Ranbaxy’s advisers are Luthra & Luthra Law Offices, Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co. Daiichi Sankyo hired Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and AMSS.

The Shearman & Sterling team included partners Peter Lyons and Eliza Swann, mergers and acquisitions; Patrick Robbins and Richard Schwed, litigation; and Jessica Delbaum, antitrust.

The Davis Polk corporate team includes partners David L. Caplan and Michael Davis. Partner Ronan P. Harty is providing antitrust and competition advice. Partner Rachel D. Kleinberg is providing tax advice.

Weil is advising Evercore Partners Inc., financial adviser to Sun Pharmaceutical, with a team that includes corporate partner Michael Aiello.
