March 31 (Bloomberg) -- The University of Tennessee and University of South Carolina both lost as top regional seeds in the final 16 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament.
Maryland, the fourth seed in the Louisville Region, defeated Tennessee 73-62 yesterday behind a 33-point, 13-rebound effort by Alyssa Thomas. The Terrapins (27-6) next face third-seeded Louisville, which beat Louisiana State 73-47, for a spot in the Final Four.
North Carolina, the No. 4 seed in the Stanford Regional, took down South Carolina 65-58 to move into the final eight. Up next for the Tar Heels (27-9) tomorrow is second-seeded Stanford, which rolled past Penn State 82-57 yesterday.
Top-ranked Connecticut meets No. 3 Texas A&M today in the final of the regional in Lincoln, Nebraska. Notre Dame is also seeking a spot in the Final Four as the top-seeded Irish host No. 2 Baylor today in the Notre Dame Region.
