Police Officer Wounded in Toronto Courthouse Shooting

March 28 (Bloomberg) -- A police officer was wounded and a a shooter was killed during an exchange of gunfire at a Toronto-area courthouse today, according to police reports.

A man entered a court in Brampton, Ontario and shot a police officer, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit said in a statement. Police fired back and killed the shooter, according to the statement.

The police officer was rushed to hospital, Constable George Tudos, a spokesman for Peel Regional Police said in a phone interview. “We don’t know the extent of the injuries at this time,” he said.

The Special Investigations Unit operates apart from the police, investigating any incidents involving law enforcement officers where someone is seriously injured or killed, according to its website.

Stewart Bell, a reporter for the National Post who was inside the courthouse at the time of the shooting, said on Twitter that police had declared the building safe and were interviewing people leaving the courthouse.

Earlier, police had locked down the building and searched it with a tactical unit and a dog, Bell said on Twitter.
