March 24 (Bloomberg) -- Robert Mueller III, the longest serving director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation since J. Edgar Hoover, joined Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr LLP as a partner in its Washington office.

Mueller stepped down from the FBI on Sept. 4 after leading the agency for 12 years under two presidents.

Robert Novick, co-managing partner of WilmerHale, said in a statement today that Mueller “brings to the firm his broad range of experience as a career prosecutor, an ability to lead the most sensitive investigations, his steady hand in a crisis and unquestioned integrity.”

Mueller took the FBI position one week before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

He “managed the transition of the FBI into an agency that dealt not only with the hardest criminal justice matters but also with the most challenging national security issues,” Novick said in the statement.

Mueller, who has a teaching appointment at Stanford University, was unavailable for comment. The firm said he will work in WilmerHale’s investigations and criminal litigation department, as well as the strategic response practice.

The firm has other former government officials in its partnership including Ken Salazar, who served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 2009 to 2013, and Charlene Barshefsky, who was U.S. Trade Representative from 1997 to 2001.

Mueller served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer, an assistant U.S. attorney in three different offices and U.S attorney for the Northern District of California. He had been a partner at Hale & Dorr LLP from 1993 to 1995, before the firm’s 2004 merger with Wilmer Cutler & Pickering LLP.
