March 21 (Bloomberg) -- John Briscoe, a Harvard University professor, has been named 2014 Stockholm Water Prize laureate to honor works in water management and policy-making that have taken him from Bangladesh to Mozambique, Brazil and India.

Briscoe, 66, a native of South Africa praised for fusing science related to water projects and environmental challenges with policy, will be presented the prize and $150,000 by King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden on Sept. 4 during World Water Week.

The professor in the schools of engineering and applied science, public health and government, a former World Bank country director for Brazil, was cited in the award for melding “world-class research with policy implementation and practice to improve the development and management of water resources as well as access to safe drinking water and sanitation.”

‘‘I’ve had an incredibly lucky life,’’ Briscoe, whose mother ran an orphanage in Soweto, said in a video interview on the Stockholm International Water Institute website. ‘‘I’ve had incredible mentors.’’
