Salesforce.com Names General Colin Powell to Board of Directors

March 14 (Bloomberg) -- Salesforce.com Inc., the biggest maker of customer-management software, named former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to its board of directors.

The appointment of Powell, a retired four-star general who served in the U.S. Army for 35 years, brings the size of the board to 11 members, San Francisco-based Salesforce said today in a statement.

Powell, a Republican who backed President Barack Obama in the 2008 and 2012 elections, joins Salesforce as Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff spends on acquisitions and expands data centers to lure government customers that have stricter requirements.

Powell, 76, has been involved with Salesforce for a number of years already, helping to create the company’s philanthropic foundation, Benioff said in the statement.

“General Powell is an extraordinary leader who has inspired and influenced me during more than 15 years of friendship,” Benioff said.

A onetime chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell is a strategic limited partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. He also sits on the board of the Council on Foreign Relations.
