March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Gonzaga University clinched a 16th straight trip to the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament with a 75-64 win against Brigham Young University for the West Coast Conference title.
It was the 13th conference title for Gonzaga (28-6), which opened a 21-point first-half lead last night in Las Vegas and held on for the victory. BYU (23-11) has to wait to see if it will receive one of the at-large berths to the NCAA tournament.
Mount St. Mary’s University of Emmitsburg, Maryland, clinched an NCAA tournament berth with a 16-16 record after knocking off top-seeded Robert Morris 88-71 in the title game of the Northeast Conference tournament.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (21-13) earned a trip to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006 by defeating Wright State 69-63 for the Horizon Conference title.
A total of 12 schools have captured automatic berths so far in the 68-team NCAA tournament field. The championship game of the Patriot League tournament is scheduled for tonight as top-seeded Boston University faces No. 2 American University.
