Carney Urges Osborne to Consider Female Candidates for BOE

March 7 (Bloomberg) -- Bank of England Governor Mark Carney urged Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne to ensure gender diversity at the highest ranks of the institution.

In response to a letter about female economists who may be suitable for the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee, Carney said he would be “raising this issue” with Osborne.

“The lack of female participation, especially on the MPC, is striking,” Carney wrote in the letter, dated Aug. 28. “Though it is the responsibility of the government to select candidates for the MPC, the bank has a responsibility to foster top female economists all the way through the ranks.”

The release of the correspondence comes as Osborne prepares to name a replacement for BOE Deputy Governor Charlie Bean, who retires at the end of June. There’s been no female member of the nine-member MPC since Kate Barker left the panel in 2010. Lucrezia Reichlin, a professor at the London Business School, is among the short-listed applicants for the role.
