March 5 (Bloomberg) -- Devin Hester, who has returned more punts for touchdowns than any player in National Football League history, said he won’t return to the Chicago Bears for a ninth season.
“I’ve always said I wanted to retire a Chicago Bear but sometimes things don’t work out the way we would like,” Hester, 31, wrote on his Facebook page.
Hester in October ended a two-year scoring drought with a record-extending 13th punt return for a touchdown against the Washington Redskins. The 81-yard run tied him with Deion Sanders for an NFL record 19th return for a touchdown. Hester has also returned five kickoffs and one missed field goal for touchdowns.
As a rookie in the Super Bowl after the 2006 season, Hester returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. The Indianapolis Colts won the game 29-17.
