March 3 (Bloomberg) -- Plaxico Burress is looking to return to the National Football League after missing the 2013 season with a shoulder injury.

The wide receiver, 36, said he’s on track to be healthy by training camp after tearing a rotator cuff with the Pittsburgh Steelers in August. He’ll be a free agent.

“I’m going to treat it as I am coming back to play,” Burress said, according the Steelers’ website. “I’m going to keep that mindset until they tell me otherwise. I’m going to keep going until I can’t go anymore.”

Burress played three games with the Steelers in 2012, returning to the team that drafted him in 2000. He spent 2011 with the New York Jets after missing two seasons while he served 20 months in jail on a weapons charge after shooting himself in the leg while a member of the New York Giants.

The 6-foot-5 Burress spent his first five seasons in Pittsburgh before a four-year stint with the Giants. He has 553 career receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns.

“I still have a ways to go from a rehab standpoint,” Burress said. “I am rehabbing every day and will see how it feels when the offseason program starts. I am doing a few more exercises with my shoulder to get it stronger.”
