Slovakia Lures Amazon After Czech City Rejects Development Plan

Slovakia wants to persuade Inc. to build a logistics center in the eastern European country after a Czech city across the border rejected construction.

The country “has taken initial steps” to start talks with the Seattle-based company, Economy Ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovic said in an e-mailed statement today from the Slovak capital, Bratislava. The talks may concern the location and “eventual” state aid, he said without elaborating.

The company wants to develop two centers in the Czech Republic as it expands services in eastern Europe. Amazon has already won approval by municipal officials in Dobroviz to build one in the village close to Prague.

Slovakia’s offer comes after the Czech city of Brno, located about 65 kilometers (40 miles) from the border between the two countries, rejected the project on Feb. 14. Slovakia and the Czech Republic were federal partners in Czechoslovakia until the 1993 split.
