Calgon Carbon Profit Climbs on Demand for Clean Water Technology

Feb. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Calgon Carbon Corp., a provider of activated carbon and ultraviolet technologies that clean water and air, reported fourth-quarter profit rose 21 percent.

Sales of $133.1 million were 6.1 percent lower from the year-earlier period, mainly due to weaker revenue for granular activated carbon for drinking water in Asia and a stronger U.S. dollar, the Pittsburgh-based company said today in a statement.

The largest producer of granular activated carbon will continue cost-improvement efforts and work to “capitalize on opportunities for top-line growth from environmental regulations for mercury removal from coal-fired power plants and for ballast water treatment,” Chief Executive Officer Randy Dearth said. The shares have risen 28 percent the past year.
