Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Rafael Nadal withdrew from next week’s Copa Claro tennis tournament in Buenos Aires because of a stomach virus, delaying his return from a back injury sustained at the Australian Open.
The world No. 1 said he hasn’t trained on court for a single day since the Melbourne tournament last month, according to the men’s ATP tour website.
“It makes it impossible for me to arrive with the adequate preparation to compete in such an important and demanding tournament,” Nadal was quoted as saying.
Nadal of Spain lost in four sets to Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka during the Australian Open final in which he was treated for an injured back.
His next scheduled tournament is the inaugural Rio Open in Brazil which starts Feb. 17.
