Swansea City Makes Garry Monk Coach, Replacing Michael Laudrup

Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Swansea City selected Garry Monk as its new coach to replace Michael Laudrup in an effort to rejuvenate the club’s faltering Premier League soccer campaign.

Laudrup, 49, was fired yesterday after the Welsh club slipped to 12th in the 20-team standings, having lost 12 of its 24 league games this season.

“Garry Monk will take up the reigns as head coach alongside current first team coach Alan Curtis for the foreseeable future,” Swansea said today on the club’s website.

Monk, 34, joined Swansea as a player in 2004 and played a role in three promotions as the club rose from the lowest of England’s top four tiers into the Premier League. He made 270 appearances, including as a substitute during last year’s 5-0 win against Bradford City in the final of the League Cup.

Swansea appointed Laudrup, a Dane, on a two-year contract in June 2012. He played for clubs including Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona, where he won the European Cup. He’s coached teams including Spain’s Getafe and Real Mallorca.

Monk’s first game in charge will be a home match against Welsh rival Cardiff on Feb. 8.
