Swansea City Fires Coach Michael Laudrup as Team’s Form Dips

Premier League soccer club Swansea City fired coach Michael Laudrup after the team slipped to 12th in the 20-team standings.

The Welsh club has lost 12 of its 24 league games this season.

“It is a decision we have taken reluctantly,” Swansea Chairman Huw Jenkins told the club website last night. “But it’s a decision made in the best interests of Swansea City Football Club and our supporters.”

Swansea appointed the Dane on a two-year contract in June 2012 and he led the team to its first major trophy, the League Cup, last February when it beat Bradford City 5-0 in the final.

Laudrup, 49, played for clubs including Barcelona, where he won the European Cup, Real Madrid and Juventus. He’s coached teams including Spain’s Getafe and Real Mallorca.
