Motiva Convent Refinery Said to Shut Crude Unit Feb. 8

Motiva Enterprises LLC’s Convent, Louisiana, refinery plans to shut a crude unit for repairs on Feb. 8, a person familiar with the work said.

The 100,000-barrel-a-day vacuum distillation unit will be down for 40 days to 45 days of scheduled maintenance, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public. One of five processing lines, known as trains, at the refinery’s sulfur plant will also be shut, the person said.

Destin Singleton, a Motiva spokeswoman in Houston, declined to provide specific information on the work.

The Convent refinery, 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of New Orleans, can process 255,000 barrels a day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The plant receives crude by pipeline and distributes finished oil products by pipe, rail, truck and water to markets along the Gulf Coast and in the southeastern U.S., the company website shows.

Vacuum units upgrade the heavy residue from atmospheric distillation into lighter feedstock for secondary units such as catalytic crackers.

Motiva is a refining and marketing joint venture of Saudi Refining Inc., a subsidiary of Saudi Arabian Oil Co., and Shell Oil, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell Plc.
