Super Bowl Scene: Women, Food, Liquor, McCartney, Foxx

Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- An ankle sprain didn’t stop cornerback Richard Sherman from celebrating his team’s Super Bowl victory at Marquee last night. The nightclub in Chelsea also welcomed Seattle Seahawks safety Kameron Chancellor, wide receiver Percy Harvin and the game’s Most Valuable Player, Malcolm Smith.

Hip-hop artist Drake took a turn at the DJ booth, and Bow Wow, Jermaine Dupree and Marquee’s co-owner, Noah Tepperberg, were also on hand for a pop-up of a Sunday night party held in Miami at LIV in the Fontainbleau hotel.

Drink orders included champagne, vodka and cranberry, and Ciroc Peach. The toast: “43 to 8.”

Super Bowl parties are a bar mitzvah boy’s fantasy: Models, live music by chart toppers, athlete and celebrity guests, long hashtags, goofy photo booths.

The Maxim Magazine Big Game Weekend party on Saturday night fit the bill. “You see women and food and liquor -- what more could a guy want?” said Nathaniel Lopez, a web developer.

Lopez, 27, helped himself to a chicken satay served by a waiter in a white jacket, then saddled up to the Patron bar, which he was pleased to learn was serving all kinds of liquor, not just tequila. He got a small glass of bourbon.

Then he checked out the ice sculpture from which an espresso liquor shot was being dispensed for Josefina Rodriguez, an MBA student at New York University. “This is a marketing party,” Rodriguez said. “It’s also obviously a very male-centric party.”

Corporate Style

The atmosphere was a nightclub, corporate style. The space had white walls, and the lighting was kept relatively bright, easier to see the sponsors’ signs. It also facilitated meeting people. Lopez and his friend Ryan Klein, 27 and an Internet marketing consultant, approached three models and asked them what team they were rooting for. If they weren’t sure at the start of the conversation, after a few minutes they were convinced they should support the Seattle Seahawks.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar performed five songs at 1:30 a.m. Beforehand, female dancers on four platforms around the room kept things interesting as did the accidental bump-and-grind that occurred as guests moved around the crowded space.

Game Ticket

Jack Roman, 28, an attorney, said he paid $400 for his ticket to the party, two weeks in advance, and $3,000 to attend the Super Bowl at a suite with open bar.

“This is what I hoped for and more,” Roman said. “There are models as far as the eye can see, and I saw Steven Tyler and that guy from ‘Shameless.’”

He was referring to the Aerosmith frontman and Steve Howey, who plays Kevin Ball on the Showtime series. Billy Burke of NBC’s “Revolution” and Alyssa Milano in a pink and black lace cocktail dress and jewelry from her NFL-themed women’s apparel line were also present.

Mike Heller, the chief executive officer of Talent Resources, the main presenter of the party, had an entourage that included his mom and dad.

As for the photo booth: guests were invited to sit on a red ski-lift chair, with snow-bunny models in fuzzy white boots for company. Next to the coat check as guests left were Bantam Bagels balls, a late-night carb load.

Bigger Parties

By bar mitzvah standards, Maxim delivered. But there were bigger, starrier parties elsewhere, including the Bud Light Hotel’s Main Event featuring the Zac Brown Band and the Foo Fighters performing on a cruise ship.

At the DirecTV Super Saturday Night at Pier 40, Jay Z played an 80-minute set crowned by Beyonce, for guests including Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, Jamie Foxx and the skier Lindsey Vonn.

The CEOs included Showtime Networks’ Matthew Blank; Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks; and Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots.

Paul McCartney took a spin through the Revolt TV at Time Warner Cable Studios party, as did Mary J. Blige, Victor Cruz, and Paul Haggis. Drake and Sean Combs performed.

“I honestly could not tell you the name of a player on either team, but I know who’s playing,” celebrity blogger Perez Hilton told Time Warner’s live web broadcast. “I’m rooting for the Seahawks because they retweeted me.”

Food Banks

Two other event notes: The Taste of the NFL Party with a Purpose raised money for food banks in cities with National Football League teams. Cheerleaders greeted guests in cavernous Brooklyn Cruise Terminal for a mega tasting event.

Sample dishes: Hudson Valley duck pastrami on rye with Red Jacket Orchard apples and Hudson Whiskey mustard prepared by the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, and chili-spiced Mayan hot chocolate with dulce de leche-filled churros, served by Prado restaurant, representing San Diego

At the Axxis Sports & Entertainment Leather and Laces party, guests were greeted by a woman dressed in red lace bra and panties. Russian model Kristina Gesell, 25, said she was looking forward to her husband teaching her about football. Having grown up outside the U.S., she’s more familiar with soccer.
