Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Chelsea’s spending in the January transfer window rose to 43.5 million pounds ($71.5 million) as French defender Kurt Zouma became Blues coach Jose Mourinho’s latest signing.
Zouma joined the Premier League side on a 5 1/2-year contract from Saint-Etienne for a transfer fee of 12.5 million pounds. He’ll remain at the French team on loan until the end of the season.
The deal, on the last day of the January transfer window, follows Chelsea’s 21 million-pound purchase of Benfica’s Nemanja Matic and the 11 million-pound signing of Basel’s Mohamed Salah. The figures are according to the Soccerbase.com website.
Also today, Fulham signed Olympiakos striker Konstantinos Mitroglou on a 4 1/2-year deal. The Daily Telegraph said the fee for the Greek international was 12 million pounds.
Clubs in England’s top tier, the world’s richest league, spent at least 725 million pounds on transfer fees since the last offseason, the highest amount for the eight-month period, according to Deloitte LP.
Manchester United spent the most on a single player so far by signing Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata for a club record 37.1 million pounds on Jan. 26.
Other transfers this month included Hull’s purchase of Ireland striker Shane Long from West Bromwich Albion for 6 million pounds, and Sunderland’s move for Argentine forward Ignacio Scocco for 3 million pounds, both fees according to the Daily Mail.
Yohan Cabaye is the most expensive player so far to exit the Premier League in the present transfer window. The French midfielder left Newcastle two days ago for French champion Paris Saint-Germain for 19 million pounds according to the British Broadcasting Corp.
The previous record Premier League transfer outlay for a season was 670 million pounds in the 2008-09 campaign, Deloitte said in an e-mail.
The league’s transfer window closes at 11 p.m.
