Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Maynilad Water Services Inc., the Philippine water utility with the most customers, has spent almost 2 billion pesos ($44 million) to curb water losses.

The company recovered almost 140 million liters (37 million gallons) of water a day in 2013, enough for 140,000 customers in the cities of Manila, Malabon, Navotas, Caloocan, Quezon, Muntinlupa, Las Pinas and parts of Cavite, it said in a statement on its website.

Maynilad spent 1 billion pesos replacing pipes and the rest to repair leaks and manage water meters.

“Rehabilitating an aging network while expanding water services is very challenging,” President and Chief Executive Officer Ricky Vargas said in the statement.

Maynilad, owned by Metro Pacific Investments Corp., and listed Manila Water Co. have separately filed a notice with the International Chamber of Commerce to dispute a regulatory order in September to cut tariffs, saying rates should instead be increased.
