Carney Says U.S. Concerned by China Pressure on Reporters

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. government is “deeply concerned” about rising pressure China is putting on foreign journalists operating in the country, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement released today.

New York Times reporter Austin Ramzy left Beijing today after authorities didn’t renew his visa, Carney said, and the U.S. government is “very disappointed” by the development.

Journalists at the Times and Bloomberg News have encountered delays with visa applications after the news organizations published reports investigating the wealth accumulated by relatives of Chinese leaders.

Carney said foreign journalists in China “face restrictions that impede their ability to do their jobs, including extended delays in processing journalist visas, restriction on travel” and “in some cases, violence at the hands of local authorities.”

“These restrictions and treatment are not consistent with freedom of the press, and stand in stark contrast with U.S. treatment of Chinese and other foreign journalists,” Carney said.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden raised concerns about treatment of journalists working for American news organizations in talks last month with President Xi Jingping, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other officials during a visit to Beijing.
