Southern Australian Wine Harvest Reduced by Heat, Herald Reports

Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The wine grape harvest in the Australian regions of Victoria and southern New South Wales has probably been reduced by between 5 percent and 10 percent by last week’s heatwave, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Richard Howden, chief executive of the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association, said growers in his region were relatively unscathed as dams were full for irrigation and vineyards had good canopy cover, the Herald reported. In southern New South Wales, Kristy Bartrop of the Riverina Wine Grapes Marketing Board said heat damage came on top of crop loss from black frost in October, which had cost the region one third of its average annual output, the Herald said.
