Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- China’s Li Na reached the semifinals of the Australian Open tennis tournament for the fourth time in the last five years, defeating Italy’s Flavia Pennetta in straight sets today in Melbourne.
Li, seeded fourth, won 6-2, 6-2 in 66 minutes against the 28th-seeded Pennetta. Li is trying to reach the final for the third time.
Her opponent in the women’s semifinals will be either No. 14 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia or No. 30 Eugenie Bouchard of Canada. Ivanovic defeated top-seeded Serena Williams of the U.S. in the fourth round. The Ivanovic-Bouchard match is next on the main Rod Laver Arena court after Li-Pennetta.
There are two men’s quarterfinals today as well. No. 3 David Ferrer of Spain plays No. 7 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic following the Ivanovic-Bouchard match, and three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, the second seed, faces No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland tonight.
