Ghana’s Sekondi-Takoradi Facing Water Shortages, Graphic Reports

Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Parts of Ghana’s Western region, including the third most populous city of Takoradi, have been without regular water supplies since mid-December, the Daily Graphic cited Daniel Moumaala, regional manager of Ghana Water Co., as saying.

The shortage in the municipality that includes the twin cities of Sekondi and Takoradi was caused by deposits of silt at Daboase, the source of water intake for treatment, Moumaala said, according to the Accra-based newspaper. Daboase is a village about 43 kilometers (27 miles) north of Takoradi, which has a key regional port used for shipments of cocoa.

Residents are using water from untreated sources and water packaged in plastic bags for sale, the state-owned newspaper reported. Some people walk 30 minutes and wait in hour-long lines to get water, according to the Graphic.
