National Water to Spend $213 Million on Jeddah Storage Project

Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia’s National Water Co. has allocated 800 million riyals ($213 million) to start implementing phases two and three of a 6 million-cubic-meter storage facility in the city of Jeddah on the Red Sea coast, it said in a statement on its website.

The state-run NWC will gain two million cubic meters of storage capacity by the end of phase three which will take 18 months to complete as of March.

NWC said in July it will complete the storage facility in three years to end water shortages in the kingdom’s second-biggest city.

The country expects to complete the world’s largest desalination plant by 2018 in Rabigh on the Red Sea, which will be able to pump 600,000 cubic meters (158 million gallons) of water a day as demand for potable water is growing in the desert kingdom.
