Ex-SAC Martoma Said Expelled From Harvard Law in 1999

Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Ex-SAC Capital Advisors LP fund manager Mathew Martoma was expelled from Harvard Law School in 1999 for creating a fake transcript, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Motions regarding alleged disciplinary proceedings against Martoma at the law school were unsealed today in Manhattan federal court as opening statements are set to begin tomorrow in his insider-trading trial. A jury was selected today.

“This event of 15 years ago is entirely unrelated to -- and has no bearing on -- this case,” Lou Colasuonno, a spokesman for Martoma, said in a statement. “Raising it now is a transparent effort by the government to unduly influence the ongoing court proceedings.”

Robb London, a spokesman for Harvard Law School, said federal privacy laws prohibit the school from discussing the matter.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan yesterday declined to hear Martoma’s bid to keep the school records sealed, saying it lacked jurisdiction in the matter.

U.S. District Judge Paul G. Gardephe, who is presiding over Martoma’s trial, ordered the court clerk to unseal the related paperwork including the defense request to keep the Harvard Law School matter from the jury.

Gardephe said today that he rejected Martoma’s request on Dec. 28 and the federal appeals court also rejected his request. The court documents haven’t been released yet.
