Dartmouth College Hires Dever From Vanderbilt as New Provost

Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Dartmouth College hired Carolyn Dever, a dean of arts and science at Vanderbilt University since 2008, as provost.

Dever, a gender studies and British literature scholar, will take over from Martin Wybourne, who has served as interim provost since 2012. Wybourne took the post after Carol Folt was appointed interim president of Hanover, New Hampshire-based Dartmouth. Folt has since left to become chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dever “is an eminent teacher and scholar who brings a depth of experience in higher education administration to this key leadership position,” Philip Hanlon, the president of Dartmouth who took office last year, said in a press release announcing the hiring today.

Dever earned an undergraduate degree from Boston College and a master’s and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Before going to Vanderbilt in 1999, she was a faculty member at New York University. Dever begins work at Dartmouth on July 1. The provost is the chief academic officer of the institution.
