Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) -- J.R. Smith of the New York Knicks was fined $50,000 by the National Basketball Association for attempting to untie an opposing player’s shoe after being warned about it by the league office.
Smith on Jan. 5 untied the shoelaces of Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion as the players were lined up along the free throw line. After receiving a warning from the NBA, Smith in a similar situation last night “attempted to repeat the action” when he bent down and put his hand near the shoe of Detroit Pistons forward Greg Monroe, the NBA said.
The league said Smith was fined for recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct.
