Cowboys Say Quarterback Romo’s Status Uncertain for Eagles Game

Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Dallas quarterback Tony Romo’s fitness will be evaluated in the days leading up to the Cowboys’ regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, coach Jason Garrett said.

Garrett told reporters in a news conference yesterday that Romo, 33, was undergoing treatment and that the team had not yet determined whether he would be available for that game.

If Romo cannot play because of a back injury, he would be replaced by Kyle Orton, 31, who has played for five teams during a National Football League career that began in 2005.

“Kyle Orton’s played in this league for a long time and we have a lot of confidence in him,” Garrett said.

Romo threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to DeMarco Murray on fourth-and-goal with 68 seconds remaining to give the Cowboys a 24-23 win at the Washington Redskins two days ago and keep Dallas in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Dallas (8-7) hosts the Eagles (9-6) this weekend in a game that will determine the National Football Conference East division championship and a postseason spot.

It is the third straight year Dallas has come into the regular season’s final weekend needing a victory for a playoff spot, and it has lost each of the last two years -- to the New York Giants in 2011 and the Washington Redskins last year.
