Manila Water Completes First Phase of Quake-Preparedness Project

Dec. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Manila Water Co., supplier of water to half of the Philippines’ most populous city, completed the first phase of an earthquake-preparedness project to ensure that facilities can operate after a 7.2-magnitude quake.

The year-long seismic-retrofitting project ensures two Balara treatment plants, constructed in 1935 and 1968 respectively, can remain operational after a tremor up to that magnitude. They will also be able to make potable supplies for almost 95 percent of those residing in the populous East Zone, the utility said today in a statement.

The project is part of plant seismic upgrades and key to a companywide disaster-preparedness program “so we can continue delivering our water supply and wastewater services even during and after major disasters,” Manila Water’s Tom Mattison, project delivery group director, said in the statement.
