Yankees Join Dodgers as Only MLB Teams Owing Luxury Tax, AP Says

The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are the only Major League Baseball teams that will have to pay a luxury tax bill for the 2013 season, the Associated Press reported.

The Yankees received a $28 million luxury tax bill, pushing their total to more than $250 million since the penalty on high player payrolls began in 2003, the AP said, based on calculations sent to teams yesterday.

The Dodgers also exceeded the tax threshold this year and must pay $11.4 million, the AP reported. Teams that exceed $178 million in payroll are subject to the tax.

The Yankees have been over the tax threshold at least four consecutive times, so they pay tax at a 50 percent rate on the amount over $178 million, the AP said.
