Orioles’ Roberts Joins Yankees to Replace Cano, ESPN Says

Free-agent second baseman Brian Roberts agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with the New York Yankees to replace Robinson Cano, ESPN reported, citing an unidentified person familiar with the negotiations.

Roberts, 36, spent his first 13 Major League Baseball seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. A two-time All-Star with a career .278 batting average, Roberts has missed 456 of the Orioles’ 648 games over the past four seasons because of concussions and injuries to his neck, back, hip and hamstrings.

Roberts batted .249 in 265 at-bats last season, with eight home runs, 33 runs scored, 39 runs batted in and three stolen bases. He’s had four seasons in which he scored more than 100 runs and four with 30 or more steals.

Cano, a five-time All-Star who hit at least 25 homers each of the past five years, earlier this month signed a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Seattle Mariners.

Left-handed reliever Matt Thornton also agreed with the Yankees on a two-year contract worth $7 million, ESPN said. Thornton, 37, will probably replace Boone Logan, who joined the Colorado Rockies as a free agent, as the Yankees’ top left-handed pitcher out of the bullpen. An All-Star in 2010, Thornton had a 3.74 earned run average in 60 games for the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox last season.
