SSE Gets Scottish Approval for Hydropower, Energy-Storage Plant

SSE Plc gained approval from the Scottish government to build a 600-megawatt hydropower plant that will also be able to store surplus energy.

The facility will have about 30 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity, the government said today in a statement on its website. It will consist of a dam, a reservoir, an underground cavern power station and underground tunnel system, it said.

“This scheme will be by far the most powerful of its kind in Scotland,” Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said. “Whilst generating it will have the potential to provide up to 10 percent of Scotland’s estimated peak electricity demand.”

The need to store energy in times of low demand for use when consumption rises is becoming increasingly important as more economies shift to using intermittent and unpredictable sources of power from the sun and wind. Scotland is aiming to get all of its electricity from renewables by 2020.
