Nets’ Deron Williams Elected Player Representative to NBA Union

Dec. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams was elected as the team’s representative to the National Basketball Association players’ union, lending a veteran voice to an organization in transition after the ouster of Executive Director Billy Hunter.

The announcement was made by union attorney Dave Kiefer in a Twitter post. Rookie Mason Plumlee, who played at Duke University, was elected by his teammates as the alternate representative, the post said.

Williams, 29, was the first player to call for the dismissal of Hunter, who was fired in February.

Hunter’s dismissal after a 16-year tenure ended almost a year of speculation about his future with the players association, punctuated by the results of an audit of the union conducted by New York-based law firm Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison. The review concluded that the former federal prosecutor failed to manage conflicts of interest, lacked proper corporate governance and didn’t disclose that his contract wasn’t properly ratified.

The union retained Chicago-based executive search firm Reilly Partners to find Hunter’s replacement. The union hasn’t given a timetable to choose a successor.

Ron Klempner, the union’s general counsel, is serving as acting executive director.

The Knicks elected Cole Aldrich as their union representative and rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. as the alternate, Kiefer said in a Dec. 9 Twitter post. Kiefer said union officials will meet with as many as eight teams next week, at which time those clubs will elect player representatives.

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul was elected president of the union in August.
