California Water Chooses Monterey Desalination Plant Contractor

California American Water, a unit of the biggest publicly traded U.S. water provider, chose CDM Constructors Inc. to build a desalination plant as part of its proposed $320 million Monterey Peninsula water-supply project.

The bid by the CDM Smith Inc. subsidiary was the lowest at $86 million of four submitted and evaluated for the desalination portion of the project, which faces a Dec. 11 review at a special meeting at the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, the utility said today in a statement

The California Public Utilities Commission is reviewing the Monterey project application with a ruling expected by August, Voorhees, New Jersey-based American Water Works Co. said.

The selection of a preferred company to build and design the plant “is a major step toward solving the Monterey Peninsula’s water supply issue,” California American Water President Rob MacLean said in the statement.

CDM works include more than 35 international desalination projects. The company said its Monterey area experience includes the Sand City desalination facility that produces potable water from brackish groundwater and a Pebble Beach Co. one that irrigates golf courses with treated recycled water.
