Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Comcast Corp.’s Universal Pictures is keeping quiet for now on the future of its “Fast & Furious” franchise after movie star Paul Walker died in a car accident yesterday.

The Associated Press reported Walker, 40, and the driver of the car were pronounced dead on the scene of a one-car crash in the community of Valencia. Deputies found a 2005 red Porsche Carrera GT, which the two were in, engulfed in flames when they arrived, AP said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said speed was a factor.

“This loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the ‘Fast and Furious’ films, and to countless fans,” Universal said in a statement last night.

Kori Bernards, a spokeswoman for the studio, declined to comment today on whether the franchise would be suspended or if Walker had completed filming his parts for a seventh installment.

The latest sequel, “Fast & Furious 6,” was the top film at theaters in the U.S. and Canada during the U.S. Memorial Day weekend, taking in $98.5 million, the biggest-ever debut for the studio.
