Dubai Air Show Deal Flood Turns to Real Thing as Expo Rained Out

A flood of plane orders at the Dubai Air Show gave way to a more watery deluge as heavy rain forced an early end to the expo in the United Arab Emirates.

The biennial trade fair closed for safety reasons on the advice of Dubai’s directorate general of civil defence after a “dramatic downpour,” Sharief Fahmy, chief executive officer of organizer F&E Aerospace, said today in a statement. People were advised not to travel to the venue in the far west of Dubai.

The U.S. military was alerted yesterday to the possibility of a sandstorm and thunderstorm and took precautionary steps, with planes moved, helicopter blades secured and some exhibits departing the site early. No aircraft were damaged or personnel injured, a U.S. Air Force official said by telephone.

The show, which began on Nov. 17 and hosted the announcement of $200 billion of aerospace orders, had been scheduled to end later today.
