Etihad Adds A350 Wide-Body Jet After Previously Canceling Order

Etihad Airways PJSC said it is buying additional Airbus SAS A350 airliners, marking a volte-face for the Middle Eastern airline after previously canceling some orders for the wide-body aircraft.

Etihad will purchase 50 A350s, including 10 of the large A350-1000 and 40 A350-900, Chief Executive Officer James Hogan said today at the Dubai Air Show. Hogan also unveiled an order for 36 Airbus A320 family jets as well as one A330 freighter, in a transaction valued at $26.9 billion. Earlier today, Hogan had announced a Boeing Co. order valued at $25.2 billion.

The commitment is a surprise comeback for Airbus after Hogan had canceled some A350-1000 orders last year, dealing a blow to Airbus at a time when the the aircraft was struggling to gain appeal with buyers. Airbus has since rekindled demand, and the mid-sized A350 is undergoing flight tests for entry into service by the end of next year.
