India Arrests Crew of U.S.-Owned Ship Over Weapons, PTI Reports

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Indian police arrested the crew of a U.S.-owned ship for rule violations including illegal possession of weapons and unauthorized entry into the South Asian nation’s territorial waters, the Press Trust of India reported.

Thirty-three of 35 crew members on board M V Seaman Guard Ohio were taken to Muthiahpuram police station in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, PTI reported yesterday, citing an official statement. Officials seized 35 weapons and ammunition from the vessel under India’s Arms Act and Essential Commodities Act, according to the report.

All arms and ammunition on the vessel are licensed and meant for countering piracy threats, PTI cited William H. Watson, president of the Washington-based shipowner AdvanFort, as saying in a separate report.
