Veolia Wins Contract to Recover Copper From Codelco Pond Waters

Veolia Environnement SA and a Chilean partner won a contract from Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, to recover minerals from tailings pond water at the El Teniente mine south of the capital Santiago.

Terms of the deal with Chile’s state-owned miner for Veolia Water Chile and Vapor Procesos’s metal recovery services weren’t disclosed in today’s announcement. The French water company said the venture plans to build and operate a new mining effluent processing facility at the biggest underground copper mine, treat 3 million cubic meters (792 million gallons) of water a year and recover about 1,680 tons of copper over the five-year contract term.
