Russia Bans Hogs and Pork From Belarus on African Swine Fever

July 8 (Bloomberg) -- Russia banned hogs and pork from the Vitebsk region in Belarus because of an African Swine Fever outbreak in the country, Rosselkhoznadzor, the food safety watchdog, said in an e-mailed statement today.

The outbreak started on June 19 in the Vitebsk region, which is on Belarus’s eastern border with Russia.

Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine also share borders with Belarus.

African Swine Fever, a viral disease for which there is no vaccine, is deadly for pigs and harmless for humans, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization.
