That's the number of families that had at least one unemployed member during 2012. It comes to 10.5 percent of all families. The good news? That's down from 9 million families in 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . While being unemployed can be harder in some states than in others (see The 10 Worst States for the Unemployed ), the improving trend coincides with the slow but steady labor market recovery from the recession.
