Airbus Works With Air Canada to Study Renewable Jet Fuel

May 13 (Bloomberg) -- Airbus SAS, Air Canada and BioFuelNet Canada agreed to work together to study clean jet fuel with the aim of eventually supplying the Canadian carrier as the aviation industry seeks to cut emissions in half.

The companies signed the agreement in Montreal today, Blagnac, France-based Airbus said in an e-mailed statement. They will do an initial study, to be finished this year, of the different processes and raw materials available for biofuel production.

Airlines won approval in July 2011 from ASTM International, the U.S. technical standards body, to fly passenger planes using a 50-50 blend of petroleum-based fuel and biofuel. Airlines that include Air Canada, Air France-KLM Group and Deutsche Lufthansa AG have flown using biofuel.

“Any new alternative fuel has to work on existing and future aircraft without modification while meeting certification requirements,” Frederic Eychenne, Airbus New Energies program manager, said in the statement. Solutions need to be “sustainable, affordable and technically suitable for all aircraft,” he said.

The International Air Transport Association has pledged to cut emissions by half by 2050 from 2005 levels.
