Amplats Says All Its South African Mines Operating Normally

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Anglo American Platinum Ltd., the world’s biggest producer of the metal, said all its mines in South Africa were operating normally today.

“Everything is normal at our operations in Rustenburg; there are no incidents,” spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole said by phone from Johannesburg.

Earlier, police spokesman Thulani Ngubane said that four people had been killed at an Amplats mine.

“It’s got nothing to do with a mine; it was five offenders who tried to escape and we arrested three inmates, with two still at large” near Rustenburg, Sarie Peens, a spokeswoman for the correctional services department in the North West province, said by phone. An offender was shot and an official was stabbed in the hand, she said.

In February, nine workers were shot with rubber bullets and three security guards were hurt at an Amplats mine in Rustenburg, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of Johannesburg. Machetes and other sharp objects were used in the attacks, according to police. Output resumed two days later.
